I finally found a simple way to show my neighbors what farriery involves.
Using an old horseshoe for a hands-on example helped them understand in minutes.

Using an old horseshoe like that is smart. I keep a few worn ones in my truck for demos. Let people feel the weight. Show them where the nails go. Point out the wear patterns. It clicks for them real quick.

Ever try that and just confuse people more?

My buddy tried that exact thing at a county fair last fall. He had this one horseshoe worn so thin in the middle it was almost sharp. Handed it to a guy who just kept asking why they don't make them thicker. Then he showed him where the hoof sits and how the nail holes line up. The guy's face just changed, like a light bulb went off over his head. He finally got that the wear is part of the point.
