My cousin called my new pants 'apocalypse chic' and now I'm stuck on it

We were grabbing coffee in Austin and she pointed out how all my recent designs use heavy-duty fabrics and lots of pockets, like I'm prepping for a disaster. It hit different because she's not into fashion at all, so it was a pure outside take. Is utility just the default look now, or are we actually designing for a vibe we hope never happens?

My sister said the same thing about my cargo pants last year. I realized we're not designing for the apocalypse, we're just tired of clothes that can't hold our stuff. That outside take is useful though, it means the look has crossed over from just being a trend.

Totally get this. My mom saw my new pants with all the pockets and asked if I was joining the military. It's not about that at all. We just need our hands free and a place for our phone and keys that isn't a tiny women's pocket. When people who aren't into fashion notice, you know it's become normal clothes and not just a style thing.

Yeah, the "joining the military" comment is a classic. Next time someone says that, I'm just gonna ask them to hold my phone since my pockets are full.
