Appreciation post: I started soaking my floral foam in warm water with a tiny bit of sugar

Ngl, I was trying to get some stubborn roses to open faster for a last-minute wedding order. I mixed a teaspoon of plain sugar into the warm water before soaking the brick, and the blooms were perfect in about 4 hours. Has anyone else tried a similar trick for stubborn flowers?

Does the water temperature matter as much as the sugar?

I always thought floral foam just needed plain water. My wife used to do arrangements and swore by the commercial flower food packets. Last month I saw her try your sugar trick on some tight peonies, and they opened like little clouds overnight. It saved a birthday centerpiece she was worried about. I guess the old ways still have some new tricks.

Watched a florist buddy get chewed out for using warm sugary water in foam. Turns out the sugar can feed bacteria in the foam if you leave it sitting too long. She had a batch of tulips go slimy on her after 24 hours. If you're doing quick turnarounds like that wedding order it's probably fine. Just don't let the foam soak overnight.
