Warning: Bad batch of carnations from the city market

I picked up a case of carnations yesterday and half were already wilting with brown edges. The vendor said it was a shipping problem but I think it's a storage issue. How do you check flower freshness when your usual spot lets you down?

Used to just look at petals, but now I check stems first.

So you learned to check the stems the hard way too, huh @the_noah? I swear I brought home the prettiest flowers once, and the stems were basically mush. Felt like a real genius. Now I give them a serious squeeze test and feel a little silly for all the rotten bouquets I used to just... accept. Guess it takes a few sad, droopy vases to really get the lesson.
