I thought those 'smart' leak sensors were a total gimmick until my basement flooded last month.

My buddy, who's an electrician, kept telling me to get one for my water heater. I figured it was just another gadget to break. Bought a cheap one on sale for about $40, stuck it on the floor next to the tank, and forgot about it. At 3 AM on a Tuesday, my phone starts screaming. The sensor went off. Got downstairs and there was already a solid puddle forming from a slow split in the tank's drain valve. Caught it before it hit the finished part of the basement. That $40 thing probably saved me thousands in drywall and flooring. Anyone have a brand they actually trust for the long haul, or are they all basically the same?

That "saved me thousands" part is so real. I read a whole article about how slow leaks cause way more damage over time than a sudden burst. They said the sensors are worth it just for catching those early. My brother swears by the brand Moen, but he's also the guy who buys the extended warranty on everything.

Slow leaks cause more damage" is a scary thought, how long was that article?

Yeah, that article about slow leaks is what got me too. It said the real danger is the water seeping into stuff you can't even see, like behind walls, and then you get mold. Makes you wonder how much hidden damage happens before anyone even notices a stain.
