My brother said he binged 'The Bear' in one sitting and it changed his mind about cooking shows

We were at his place in Chicago and he told me he watched all of season 2 in a single night. He said he used to think cooking shows were just calm background noise, but the stress and yelling in that show felt real, like his old kitchen job. Has anyone else had a show totally flip their view on a whole type of TV?

Found a weird fix for a flickering screen on a 2019 MacBook Pro

The backlight was pulsing on a unit that had a clean flex cable and no liquid damage. On a hunch, I swapped the thermal paste on the CPU with some Arctic MX-4 I had left over from a PC build. The flickering stopped completely after it cooled down and I put it back together. Has anyone else seen a thermal issue cause a backlight to act up like that?

I thought those 'smart' leak sensors were a total gimmick until my basement flooded last month.

My buddy, who's an electrician, kept telling me to get one for my water heater. I figured it was just another gadget to break. Bought a cheap one on sale for about $40, stuck it on the floor next to the tank, and forgot about it. At 3 AM on a Tuesday, my phone starts screaming. The sensor went off. Got downstairs and there was already a solid puddle forming from a slow split in the tank's drain valve. Caught it before it hit the finished part of the basement. That $40 thing probably saved me thousands in drywall and flooring. Anyone have a brand they actually trust for the long haul, or are they all basically the same?

Appreciation post: My sourdough starter finally came back to life after a week in the fridge

I had to leave town for a family thing last week and stuck my starter, 'Bubbles', in the fridge. When I got back, it looked totally flat and sad. I fed it twice a day for three days straight, using warm water and my usual King Arthur bread flour. This morning, I opened the jar and it had finally doubled in size with those perfect little bubbles. Has anyone else had a starter seem dead but pull through like that?

Question about a new way to train image models

I was showing my early tests of a local image generator to a colleague, and she pointed out all the faces looked weirdly similar. She said, 'Your training data is too narrow, you need more variety in your source images.' I switched from using just 500 photos from one archive to mixing in about 2,000 images from three different public datasets. The output got much better right away. Has anyone else found a specific data tweak that fixed a big quality issue?

Warning: my buddy's 5.0 Coyote blew up after a cheap tune

We were at the track in Bakersfield last month, and he was bragging about his new $200 handheld tuner from some online shop. He said 'it adds 50 horsepower easy, no need for a dyno.' Third pass, the engine started knocking hard and we found a hole in the block. It ran fine for a week before it let go. Anyone know a good shop in SoCal for a proper rebuild and tune?

I built two identical face frames, one with pocket screws and one with dowels. The dowel joint is just stronger.

Everyone says pocket screws are the fast, strong way to go for face frames. I used to think that too. Last month I had to build a big built-in for a client in Greenville. I made a test frame with my Kreg jig and another with a simple doweling jig. After letting both sit for a week, I tried to rack them by hand. The pocket screw frame had visible flex and a tiny bit of separation at one joint. The dowel frame was solid as a rock, no movement at all. The glue surface area on the dowels is way bigger, and the joint doesn't rely on just a screw biting into end grain. It takes a few more minutes to set up, but for something that gets daily use, it's worth it. Has anyone else done a real side by side test like this and seen the same thing?

A trip to the big discount grocery in Springfield changed how I buy beans

I was at the big discount grocery in Springfield last week, looking for cheap protein. I grabbed a can of their store brand black beans for 79 cents, thinking it was a steal. When I got home and opened it, the liquid was cloudy and the beans had a weird, almost gritty texture. I checked the label and saw it had a ton of added salt and some preservatives I didn't recognize. Now I only buy the plain, no-salt-added cans from the regular store, even if they cost a dollar more. It's worth it to know what I'm putting in my chili. Has anyone else had a bad experience with a specific store's budget brand?

Can we talk about the 'battery calibration' myth for smartwatches?

My Garmin Venu 2's battery life tanked to under a day after a year, and every forum said to do a full drain and recharge to 'calibrate' it. I tried that three times and it made things worse. Finally, I called support and the tech told me that's bad for modern lithium batteries and to just do a normal charge cycle. After a week of normal use, it's back to its old 4-day life. Has anyone else had a gadget where the common 'fix' online was totally wrong?
