Warning: I skip the full insulation pack in wet crawl spaces
I know most guys jam insulation into every corner, but that just asks for trouble in damp areas. Last spring, I had to redo a whole basement because the packed insulation held moisture and rotted the joists. Now I use a lighter touch near foundations where water seeps in. It still keeps the cold out but lets the wood breathe. Sure, some inspectors might question it, but I haven't had a mold complaint since. Honestly, fighting nature with a ton of fluffy stuff is a losing game.

Totally agree with you on this. Moisture trapped in insulation can wreck everything. I switched to a lighter approach too and it's been way better.

Wait, is it really that big of a deal everywhere? Amy_hunt53's garage fix makes sense, but that's a small space. My attic has thick insulation for harsh winters and I've never seen actual damage, just some cold spots. People might be worrying over a small risk that only matters in really damp places.

Last month, This Old House had a segment on attic moisture problems. The host explained how too much insulation can hold damp air against the roof. That's why a lighter setup often works better, letting things dry out. I tried a similar approach in my garage and no more musty smell! Really glad you found something that works for you too.
