From my agility class, I'm seeing a push towards DIY training treats
Over the past few months, I've noticed a trend where pet owners are using homemade, single-ingredient treats for training. The idea is that these natural options avoid additives and help with precise reward timing, potentially boosting learning. I'm wondering if others have experienced better results with this approach compared to standard store-bought rewards.

Exactly what ben said, those homemade chunks are a mess when you're trying to move fast. I just pre-cut everything into tiny, same-size squares before class. Freeze-dried liver crumbles way less than baked sweet potato. You still get the single-ingredient benefit but without the fumbling, keeps your dog's attention locked on you instead of the floor snacks.

After 500 treats, @tylerh47, I've learned uniformity beats chasing crumbs like a lunatic.

The claim that single-ingredient treats improve reward timing is genuinely surprising. Handling uneven pieces of baked sweet potato during a fast-paced sequence often leads to dropped crumbs and wasted seconds. My dog would be more focused on sniffing the floor than performing the next obstacle, which hardly speeds up learning. Uniform commercial treats seem designed for quick, clean delivery without that hassle.
