PSA: Proximity chat defaults in VR lounges need a rethink

I'm spending hours in social VR spaces only to have my immersion shattered by unavoidable voice spam from random avatars. Some argue that always-on audio is crucial for authentic social presence and serendipitous encounters. Others believe it should be opt-in by default to protect users from harassment and noise pollution, even if it sacrifices some spontaneity. Where do you stand on this balance between freedom and comfort?

Did my buddy's last VR session get ruined by default proximity chat? He was trying to have a deep conversation in a virtual library when some avatar started blasting meme sounds right next to him. After ten minutes of that nonsense, he just quit the app entirely. That's why I'm firmly in the opt-in camp, because forced interactions often push people away instead of bringing them together. Sacrificing a bit of spontaneity is worth it if it means people actually stay in the space.

Ugh, that reminds me of my friend who just wanted to relax in a quiet cooking game! Some player followed her around the whole kitchen making loud slurping sounds with their mic while she was trying to follow a recipe. She ended up muting all voice chat permanently, which totally killed the social part she liked. Forced fun isn't fun at all, and it just makes people shut down. Opt-in chat saves the peace for sure!

I just mute by default now, like @lane.cameron said. Peace restored.
