The old plumber at the ANMP meetup pointed out my copper work looked like a mess, and he wasn't wrong
I did a repipe job up in Rio Rancho last fall and thought I did solid work until an older plumber at the monthly ANMP meetup glanced at my photos. He said my joints were clean but my torch work was scorching the copper because I was running the flame too close. He told me I'd get pinhole leaks in 18 months if I didn't back off. So I changed how I hold the torch, moved the flame tips about an inch further and let the heat do the work instead of the flame. Six months later I tore into one of my older installs and saw exactly what he meant, discolored tube and the start of wear. It cost me nothing to fix other than swallowing my pride. Any of you ABQ folks had old school tradespeople correct your work and actually turn out right?
Man that hits home. I had a similar thing happen when a guy I used to work with told me I was overdoing the flux and it was gonna eat the pipe from the inside. I blew him off at the time because my joints were passing pressure tests fine, but about a year later I cut into one and sure enough there was green junk all over the inside of the fittings. Swallowing your pride is the hard part, not the fix. Good on you for actually going back and checking your old work instead of just getting mad about it. That old guy probably saved you a bunch of callbacks.
