Thought that Sarah McLachlan dog ad was overhyped until I watched it at 2am in my kitchen
For years I rolled my eyes at that ASPCA commercial with the sad dogs and the song, figured it was just emotional bait to get old people to donate. Then one night in November I was up at 2am eating cold pizza in my kitchen in Boise and it came on, and by the time she hit the chorus I had tears running into my ranch dip. The part that got me was just one slow zoom on a beagle shivering in a cage, no voiceover, nothing. I ended up donating $25 on my phone right there with pizza grease fingers, which is probably the saddest and funniest thing I've done all year. Did any of you actually make it through that ad dry eyed or am I just a sucker now?
That beagle shivering shot is the oldest trick in the book, one sad animal plus slow zoom equals wallet open, and it works on everyone at 2am. Ad agencies know exactly what they're doing with that puppy footage, so congrats on funding their next commercial with your pizza hands.
