I used to think my rescue pit mix was just lazy, then the vet pulled up a chart on dog naps
My dog Rufus sleeps about 16 hours a day and I honestly felt bad, like I was failing him or he was depressed or something. I asked the vet about it during his checkup in Tucson two weeks ago and she pulled up this chart that said adult dogs sleep 12 to 14 hours and bigger dogs can go up to 18. She laughed and said his breed is basically built for napping between short bursts of chaos. Turns out the 2 mile hike we do on weekends is plenty and I was the one who needed to chill, not him. Now I let him snooze on the couch without feeling guilty every time. Has anyone else had a vet tell them their dog's sleep schedule was normal and not a problem?
Sounds like your vet just told you what every dog owner already knows, dogs sleep a lot and it is not some big crisis. 16 hours is normal for a big dog, you were just overthinking it.
