Update: heard a recruiter in Chicago tell a room of 60 people that 'verbal offers mean nothing'
I sat in on a free agency law panel in Chicago last month and a recruiter on the panel dropped that line about verbal offers. She explained that at her firm, a verbal offer only counts once it is written into a signed agreement, and she keeps a list of 14 candidates who got burned waiting on a handshake. What stuck with me is how many people in that room seemed shocked, like they had never thought about it. Since then I have been reading up on how verbal contracts actually work state to state, and it seems like the rules are all over the place. Has anyone here dealt with a client who thought a verbal offer was binding and had to walk them through what the law really says?
