Got roasted on a flooring forum for using self-leveler wrong, now I never skip the primer.

A guy with 20 years experience told me my cracked tile job was from skipping primer on the concrete, but half the comments said primer is a waste of money for small patches, so which side is actually right when your subfloor has old glue residue?

Read somewhere that old glue residue needs primer even more because it creates a weak bond.

Honestly, that's a really good point. If the glue is hidden under paint and not sealed right, it can basically turn into a weak layer that just lets everything lift off later.

Yeah, the "weak bond" part is what gets people. If you paint over glue residue without primer, that stuff can fail in like a year and peel off in sheets. I've had to scrape off whole ceilings before because someone skipped the primer step.
