Vent: my grandma's old photos went from blurry mess to sharp in 20 minutes and I'm kinda shook
I scanned about 40 pics from my grandma's box of photos from the 60s and most of them looked washed out and soft, way worse than I remembered. I ran them through one of those free AI upscalers online and after 20 minutes the faces and even the fabric patterns came back sharp, no photoshop skills needed. Is there a catch here I'm missing, like does it mess up the colors long term or should I upscale the whole box?
That "20 minutes" part is adorable, like you just microwaved a burrito and unlocked 60 years of family history. Here's the thing though, AI upscalers don't bring back detail that isn't there, they guess at it. That lace pattern on your grandma's dress that suddenly looks crisp? The computer made it up, and it might look nothing like the real thing. Skin gets that weird smooth plastic look too, so zoom in on faces before you commit. Do a few side by side tests and if the fake lace doesn't bug you, go ahead and run the whole box. Just keep the originals safe, because once you strip the softness out, you can't put it back.
