My old shop lead in Spokane said torque specs are just suggestions on a wheel change, and I spent 15 years nodding along
Ran into him at a parts store on Division last month and he laughed about how many wheels he used to send out with an impact gun and no torque wrench. I used to think the guy was a legend for how fast he worked flat rate, but now I keep thinking about a customer's F-150 that came back at 2,000 miles with two studs stretched and the wheel starting to walk off. Anyone else have an old timer they looked up to who was actually just skipping steps they never told you about?
Wait, he actually laughed about it? That part gets me, because sending wheels out with just an impact and no torque wrench is how you lose a wheel on the highway. Two stretched studs at 2,000 miles was that customer getting lucky, not the shop doing them a favor. The speed was never skill, it was just skipped steps nobody saw.
