Bought a $300 wire tracer for a job in Phoenix and it paid for itself in one day
I was bidding a old bank building in Phoenix with 40+ zones and half the wires were unlabeled from a 90s install. My cheap tone generator kept bleeding signal through every cable in the bundle so I couldn't tell which pair went where. I finally dropped $300 on a proper wire tracer with the amplified probe and wand, and I found all 43 zones in about 4 hours instead of the 3 days I'd budgeted. The customer was so happy they added a camera upgrade on the spot. What's the tool you bought that you hated paying for but ended up being a lifesaver?
That bleeding signal issue is the worst, especially in old buildings with who knows what kind of wiring from back in the day. A trick that saved me before I got a good tracer was pulling the suspect pair off the block first and shorting one end, then checking continuity at the other. Cuts down the ghost signal a ton when you're in a big bundle. The amplified probe is a game changer though, no question. Sounds like that Phoenix job had nightmare written all over it with 40+ zones. Getting it done in 4 hours instead of 3 days is the kind of win that makes the $300 hurt a lot less lol.
