My friend swore I needed to watch Dragon Ball Z starting from episode 1
I had a buddy named Jake who kept insisting I couldn't skip the first 30 episodes of Dragon Ball Z because I'd miss crucial character development. I told him I read the manga years ago and just wanted the action scenes. He got all defensive, said the anime adds layers the manga doesn't have. I sat through like 12 episodes of Gohan crying in the woods and Raditz taking forever to show up. Finally I skipped to the Vegeta fight and honestly nothing was lost. Jake still brings it up like I cheated myself. Anyone else have a friend who gatekeeps how to watch a show?

YOU'LL miss character development" sounds like Jake needs a new hobby.

Well I've been guilty of telling my wife to "wait until the third episode" for years now, so maybe I'm the one who needs a new hobby. She still hasn't forgiven me for making her watch the first season of The Wire where nothing happens for six episodes. But honestly, if you're the type who skips cutscenes in video games or fast forwards through dialogue, then yeah, you're going to miss the little moments that make characters feel real. I've got a friend who skips every movie to the last 10 minutes and then acts like he knows the plot. Some folks just want the payoff without the slow burn. To each their own I guess, but don't complain when the ending doesn't hit because you skipped the setup.
