Picking up on background art changed how I watch anime
I used to only follow the main plot in anime. Then I saw a thread where people pointed out small things in the scenes. Now I check for stuff like hidden symbols or how colors set the mood. It makes each show feel richer and more fun to watch.

Honestly, sometimes I wonder if we're all just looking way too hard into this stuff. Like, @the_stella makes a good point about it adding layers, but I tried doing that and spent half an episode staring at a bookshelf instead of following the actual story. It started to feel like homework. Maybe some shows just have cool art, and it's not always a secret code.

Notice how much story gets told in the backgrounds. Look for things like the posters on a character's bedroom wall, what's written on a shop sign, or even another character walking by in the distance. Shows with good directors hide little jokes and future plot hints back there. It completely changes how you rewatch a show too, because you catch all the setup you missed. That extra layer is what separates a good show from a great one for me now.

Totally get that shift in focus. Started paying attention to little things like peeling paint on a wall to show a run-down town, or how a shop sign changes after a time skip. Makes the world feel alive and the writers seem so clever. Now rewatching old favorites just to spot all the background storytelling I missed the first time.
