What is it with modern fridges and ice makers?

My neighbor's Samsung ice maker died at 14 months old last week. I tore it apart expecting a clogged line but the whole auger motor assembly was seized up. Has anyone else seen this failure pattern or is it just luck of the draw?

Was the freezer defrost circuit working properly before it seized?

Nah man I think the defrost circuit was probably fine the whole time honestly.
