Tbh that teacher might have a point, at least for beginners. Friction savers can hide bad habits like sloppy redirects or not reading the tree right before you even get the line set. If you can't do the job without one, maybe you weren't ready for that tool anyway. The school probably has a rule about using gear you haven't been checked off on, and that's on you for not following it. Plus, learning the hard way now saves you from a nasty surprise later when you're up in a real tree with no backup.
