Warning: dropped a 40 foot limb on a fence in Sacramento and had to eat the cost
Back cut pinched my saw and the hinge pulled before I could get out from under it, so the limb clipped the corner of a client's new redwood fence. I paid $620 out of pocket for the repair instead of filing a claim, and now I rig every leaning limb over 8 inches before it even gets a face cut. Anyone got a favorite trick for reading hinge wood on a lean you can't see from the ground?
Man that fence bill hurts just reading it. Had almost the same thing happen two years back, big oak limb over a shed, saw pinched and she rolled on me, caved in the corner of a brand new roof I'd just finished. Cost me about $500 in shingles and a whole Saturday to fix it myself. Now anything leaning past a certain point gets a rope in it before the saw even fires up, no exceptions. For reading hinge wood when you can't see it good from the ground, best trick I know is to stand back and watch the kerf open up as you cut, if it starts closing on the top you know she's leaning harder than you thought.
