PSA: stop sanding primer with 80 grit and calling it a guide coat
Watched a kid at the shop in Spokane burn through a door skin last Tuesday because he treated 80 grit like a finishing paper. Guide coat is supposed to be a dusting of black over 400 or 600, just enough to show your low spots, not a layer you grind off with a DA. Twenty years back we did it with rattle can black and a hand block, and you could read the panel like a map. Now guys see scratches and keep cutting until there is bare metal showing. What grit are you all running for your final blocking pass?
Man, I feel for that kid. We all burned something early on and learned the hard way. Your point about the black dusting is dead on. It is not a coat at all, it is a tell. I still keep a can of cheap flat black around and just fog it on over my 400, then block with a soft pad and let the lows show themselves. If you are still seeing sand scratches after that pass, you need to step back to 600, not bury the DA in the panel. Slow hands save panels, fast hands buy doors.
