Talked to a paint supplier that made me rethink my clear coat method

Was grabbing some PPG Deltron at the Finishing Supply in Tacoma last week and the old guy behind the counter asked why I was using three heavy coats. He said I should be doing four lighter ones with more flash time between each. Tried it on a 2018 Camry quarter panel yesterday and the gloss came out way better with zero runs. Anyone else adjust their clear coat application after talking to a supplier or painter you trust?

Honestly I get where he's coming from but three heavy coats always worked fine for me on production work. Four lighter coats just means more sanding and buffing if you mess up the texture between them. Tbh the real trick is getting your gun setup and speed right not counting coats.

Man my buddy tried @jamesfox's method last week and his clearcoat ended up looking like orange peel.
