Dropped $400 on a smoke machine for diag work and it paid for itself in 3 jobs
I put off buying a real smoke machine for years because I figured I could keep finding vacuum leaks with carb cleaner and my ears. Last fall I finally grabbed a decent one for around $400 after a 2006 Silverado with a P0171 kicked my butt for two days. Found a cracked intake gasket in about 15 minutes with the smoke, charged the customer for the diag, and had two more leak jobs that same week. If you're still chasing evap and vacuum leaks the old way, what's actually holding you back from buying one?
How many hours have you burned chasing a leak you couldn't hear or see? I read a thread on a tech forum where a guy said his smoke machine found more leaks in one month than his ears did in five years. That math alone makes the $400 look cheap.
