A ranger in Shenandoah told me to flip my map upside down and it actually helped
I was planning a 3 day loop on the Appalachian Trail near Front Royal last month and kept getting turned around on paper. He said just flip the map so the trail direction matches how I'm walking, and suddenly the climbs made sense. Does anyone else do this, or do you just trust the elevation profile?
Did you check the compass rose on your map? That's the thing that got me at first, maps are usually drawn with north up but if you're hiking south the whole thing is basically backwards. I started marking my direction with a sharpie on the edge of the map and it does the same job as flipping it. Takes a little practice either way but whatever keeps you from staring at a ridge that isn't there.
