Just hit 500 miles on the same pair of trail runners, mostly from the John Muir Trail last year... that number really surprised me.

Hold up, are we sure soft trails are actually easier on shoes? All that loose dirt and sand acts like gritty sandpaper grinding away at the fabric and seams over hundreds of miles. Maybe pavement is a cleaner, more consistent surface that just wears the tread down evenly without all the hidden damage.

That's some serious mileage. I got maybe 300 out of my last pair before the tread was totally flat. The JMT will do that, all that soft dirt and pine duff is way easier on shoes than pavement.

Wait, so you're telling me the secret to long shoe life is just walking on pillows all day? @charlie_ellis, I need to trade my sidewalk commute for a pine duff trail, clearly. My shoes look like racing slicks after a few months on concrete. Maybe I should just carry my shoes and walk barefoot until I hit dirt.
