Switched from a 65L pack to a 40L for a week in the Sierra Nevada and it felt like I was cheating
For years I crammed everything into a giant Osprey, thinking I needed all that gear for a 5 day trip. Last summer I forced myself to take only my 40L pack and quit carrying camp shoes and a full chair. Anyone else find downsizing actually made their knees feel better on the downhill?

Nah, bigger packs mean more snacks and that is worth the knee pain.

It's the same story with everything now. People haul around a full toolkit when all they need is a screwdriver. I see it with neighbors who buy those monster pickup trucks to drive to the office then complain about gas prices. Or friends who fill their entire kitchen with specialty gadgets for one recipe. We get brainwashed into thinking more stuff equals better results. Downsizing your pack forces you to actually think about what you really need versus what you just want. Your knees thanking you is just proof that lighter is smarter.
