That comment about my pack weight snapped me out of a bad habit

Some guy on the JMT trail last summer just looked at my bag and said 'you carryin a tent or a house?' I laughed but it bugged me. Got home and weighed everything out, had like 8 pounds of extra clothes and a camp chair. Sold the chair, cut down to one spare shirt, saved 4 pounds for my next trip. Anyone else get a rude comment that actually made you rethink your gear?

Wait, you actually brought a camp chair on the JMT?

Is there something wrong with bringing a little comfort on the trail, @the_karen? I get ultralight is the meta, but honestly my back was killing me after day two. That little camp chair saved my sanity at camp. Sat in it to cook dinner, read my book, even just to stretch my legs without sitting on a wet log or cold rock. Weight is a trade off, sure, but a good night's rest and a comfortable seat are worth the extra pound in my book. Different strokes for different folks, you know.
