Took me 3 hours to find a campsite in the Enchantments because of one stupid map mistake
Ok so last August I did the Enchantments thru hike in Washington and thought I had my route all planned out. Turns out I read the topo lines backwards and kept walking past the only flat spots for like 3 hours while my legs were dead. My buddy says you should just wing it and camp wherever, but I think spending 20 mins studying your map before you start saves your whole trip. What do you all do, scout spots on the map first or just hike till you find something?
Man, that pattern of skipping the prep and paying for it later shows up everywhere, not just on trails. Twenty minutes with a map beats three hours of wandering every single time.
