Took me 3 weekends to figure out why my pack felt heavier on the way out than the way in
So I did the Timberline Trail around Mt Hood back in July, 41 miles over 4 days, and I could not figure out why my shoulders were wrecked by mile 8 every single morning but felt fine by the last hour of the day. I kept blaming my base weight, weighed everything at home, came in at 14 pounds without food or water, which is fine. Then I started wondering if I was just getting warmed up, but that did not make sense either. On the third trip I finally stopped at a water break and actually paid attention to how the pack sat, and it hit me: I was loading all my heavy stuff at the bottom because it felt more stable when I put it on in camp. Once I moved the food bag and the stove up near my shoulders, the whole thing changed. Same weight, same trail, but the pack stopped pulling back on me all day. Three weekends of sore shoulders just to learn my packing order was backwards the whole time. Anyone else pack for how it feels standing still instead of how it carries on the move?
