Unpopular opinion: paper maps beat my phone on the JMT and my brother thinks I'm nuts
My brother and I got into it over Thanksgiving about navigation on the John Muir Trail, and he said relying on paper in 2025 is just asking for trouble. I get his side, my phone died at 11,000 feet near Forester Pass in July and the battery bank only got me halfway, so a map and compass saved that day. But he argues a real GPS unit with backup batteries is lighter and faster than a map case, and honestly he's got a point about route finding in fog. So where do you all land, is paper still worth the weight or is it time to go fully digital?
Why not just carry both and stop fighting about it? Paper never needs charging, but a GPS does route finding way better when you can't see anything in fog.
