Remembering the week I built a brick fire pit with my dad
It was about fifteen years ago, and we spent three full days in the yard, just the two of us. He taught me how to mix mortar by hand in a wheelbarrow and lay the first course level, which took us most of the first day. We used about 80 bricks from an old pile behind his shed, and I remember my hands being raw from the rough edges. What made it stand out was how quiet it was, just the sound of the trowel scraping and him giving simple tips. We finished it on a Friday evening and sat by it that same night. Has anyone else had a project that just felt really simple and good like that?

Yeah, that quiet focus is the best part. It turns a chore into a real memory, way better than any fancy project. Those simple builds just last in a different way.

Reminds me of a buddy who helped his grandpa rebuild a stone wall on their farm. He said the best part was just the rhythm of it, passing rocks and fitting them together without much talking. They still go sit on that wall when he visits.

Makes me think of the dry-stack stone fence around my uncle's old place. It was put up before anyone can remember, just rocks from the fields. You could see where different people had fixed it over the years, each with their own way of fitting the stones. That wall held up without any mortar, just patience and weight. There's something honest about work that doesn't need to be talked about.
