Showerthought: my rain barrel caught 55 gallons in one storm and that was the problem

Set up a single 55 gallon barrel under my gutter downspout in April thinking it would cover my whole vegetable patch, and after one big storm it was full and overflowing by noon while the beds were still dry. Turns out the barrel filled way faster than I could use it, so I ran a soaker hose off a second barrel and now the water actually goes somewhere. How do you all deal with overflow on a small setup without digging a whole french drain?
