Lost $300 on a fancy sourdough starter that died in two weeks

Bought that expensive heirloom starter from that California farm online last month and it arrived sluggish, then went moldy by day 12, so now I just feed my own cheap flour and water mix like I should've from the start, anyone else ever get burned by a hyped-up starter?
