Question about a $7 overdraft fee that made me rethink my whole checking setup
Got hit with a $7 overdraft fee at my credit union in Toledo three weeks ago for a $3 coffee. I was mad at first but then I looked at my statement and saw I'd done the same thing twice in two months. So one side says banks should just decline the charge instead of paying it and charging me. Other side says it's on me to watch my balance and the fee is fair warning. Where do you all land on this? My old bank charged $35 so $7 feels like a win but I still hate it.
You said you'd done the same thing twice in two months, so what changed the third time? Like, did your balance get lower around payday, or was it just random spending that crept up on you? If it's the same pattern over and over, maybe the real fix is a low balance alert on your phone instead of picking a different bank. Also, was that $3 coffee a card tap or an autopay? Those two act totally different when your account is running low.
