Just realized I was wrong about how to hold thinning shears

For years I held them like regular scissors, but a barber in Chicago showed me his grip last month. He holds them with his thumb and ring finger in the holes, not thumb and middle finger. It gives way more control for texturizing. I tried it on a client's thick hair and the blend was smoother in half the time. Anyone else use this grip or have a different trick for shears?

That grip with the thumb and ring finger is actually a standard shear hold, not just for thinning shears. It's called the ring finger grip and it gives you way more stability for all your cutting. A lot of cosmetology schools teach it from the start.

Yeah the ring finger grip @sarah829 mentioned is key. It totally locks your hand in so you can do those smooth slides without the shears wobbling. Makes a huge difference on straight lines too.

Wait, so @emery19 just found out about the ring finger grip now? I learned that in my first week of beauty school and still had trouble with it for months. It feels weird until your hand muscles finally get it.
