Saw a barber in Portland using a straight razor on a beard line with no guard

He was freehanding the whole shape, just a steady hand and a sharp blade. Anyone else ever try that technique on a tricky neckline?

Tried it once and nicked myself pretty good. My hands just aren't that steady. I stick to a safety razor with a guard for the neckline now.

You said you tried it after watching a barber do it? That's the part that gets me. I saw my barber make it look like he was just wiping away dust, no effort at all. So I figured, how hard could it be? Turns out the answer is "impossibly hard." My attempt looked like I was trying to shave while riding a bike over gravel. The angle is everything and I got it all wrong.

Oh man, "nicked myself pretty good" is putting it lightly. I tried the same thing after watching a barber do it and looked like I lost a fight with a house cat. My hand shook at the worst moment and I had a little cut that just would not stop bleeding. There's a real art to that steady pressure and angle that I just don't have. I'm with you, a guard on the safety razor is my best friend for the neckline now.
