I spent $250 on a 'viral' hashtag service that got me zero real views

So I saw this ad for a service that promised to make your post go viral by using a 'secret' set of trending hashtags. They charged $250 for a custom list and a 'boost plan'. I was trying to get my little art page off the ground and thought it was a shortcut. I paid, got the list, and posted exactly how they said. My post got a bunch of bot comments like 'nice' and 'cool page' within minutes, but my actual views from real people didn't move at all. The analytics showed the engagement was all from fake accounts. I basically paid for a bunch of spam. It was a hard lesson that you can't buy real virality. Has anyone found a legit way to research hashtags that actually work?
