Broke a customer's carbon frame with a torque wrench set to 6 Nm and now I question everything
I was dialing in the seatpost clamp on a Trek Domane at my bench in Tucson last month, and the wrench clicked at 6 Nm but the collar still crushed the tube. The customer had used grease on the clamp bolt, so my torque reading was way off from friction loss. I ate the $850 frame replacement because I should have measured the gap with feeler gauges instead of trusting the click. Now I dry-fit every carbon clamp and check for grease before I touch a wrench. Anyone else got a torque spec horror story where the numbers lied to you?
Ever torqued a bolt till it felt right then watched it snap anyway? Yeah that's me with alloy stems back in my early days. Grease on threads is such a sneaky one, the wrench clicks happy and the part pays for it.
