The wild violets in my lawn are vanishing and I think it's my fault

I've been letting my yard go a bit more natural since 2019, trying to get more bees and stuff around here in Springfield. Every spring I'd get this carpet of wild violets out by the fence line, the purple ones that pop up before the grass really takes off. But this year I noticed maybe a tenth of what I used to see, and it hit me that I've been running that new mulching mower over them too early every year, chopping them down before they can set seed. I used to wait until June, but with the warm springs we've had the last 3 years, I got eager and mowed in mid-April. Turns out those little flowers need that full 6 weeks to finish their cycle, and I basically trained them out of existence. My neighbor across the street still has a huge patch because he doesn't mow his back corner at all until July, and I'm honestly jealous. Has anyone else accidentally wiped out a native plant in their own yard by being too tidy, and did you find a way to bring it back without just buying seed?

Rice and beans vs meal kits, which one is the real win?

I did a month comparing a $45 weekly meal kit box against my $12 bag of rice and beans, and honestly the kits tasted better but my savings account looked way better. My family ate both, who else has tried this and what did you stick with?

Old timer's comment about my crimp tool made me dig deeper

Had a guy in his 60s watch me terminate a DB25 last week and said "you trust that crimp too much, kid." He showed me his beat-up manual crimper and how he measures pull test every time. Got me thinking, do you guys verify crimp quality regularly or just go by feel and a good tool?

Bought a $700 ultrasonic cleaner, my shop rags worked better

Spent $700 on a big ultrasonic unit for carburetors and fuel nozzles. It left varnish behind that a simple soak in lacquer thinner and a rag handled in half the time. Anyone else find these things are only good for small parts like injector screens?

My neighborhood recycling program got cancelled over 3 contaminated bins

Last Tuesday they put the orange tags on our bins in south Seattle. I watched the truck driver pull out a greasy pizza box and a plastic bag full of dog waste from the same load. Turns out 3 contaminated bins on one street was enough for the city to suspend the whole route for 2 weeks. Now I'm stuck hauling my glass jars and cardboard to the transfer station 6 miles away. Has anyone else had their whole block punished because of a few clueless neighbors?

Spent $1,400 on a fancy load cell and I'm still not sure it was worth it

Everyone in the yard kept telling me I needed to upgrade from my old dynamometer to one of those digital load cells with Bluetooth and all the logging features. So I dropped $1,400 on a reputable brand after a job in Charlotte where I had to guess at a pick weight because my old gauge was bouncing around. The new unit is accurate, sure, but honestly the extra data logging is something I never use on site. The phone app takes forever to pair and the battery dies faster than my old unit did. Worst part is I still mentally double check every reading with the crane's own limit chart before I lift. So I paid four times as much for a tool that makes me feel less confident, not more. Has anyone else gone back to the simpler analog gear after trying the high tech stuff? I'm one wrong reading away from selling this thing and going back to what worked.

Why I stopped taking that 'always replace the board' advice

Every repair forum I read says swap the control board first, no questions asked. Last spring I had a Whirlpool washer throwing an F5 error, and my buddy Mike swore the board was toast. I almost ordered a $240 replacement, but I checked the lid switch wiring first, 45 minutes of work and a $6 connector later, it fired right up. That experience made me realize most techs push parts because they don't want to trace a simple short. Has anyone else saved a big bill by ignoring the board-first crowd?

Split test on two hooks proved my gut wrong, and now I feel dumb

Last week I ran a split test on two reel hooks for the same repair clip. One was a question, the other was a blunt statement. The statement got 3x the views in 24 hours, about 12k total, while the question stalled at 4k. I was sure the question would win because it felt more engaging. Last Tuesday gave me the best lunar photo I'll ever take

I set up my 8 inch dob in my backyard in Tucson around 9pm, just checking the terminator line near the crater Copernicus. The seeing was dead calm, no wind, and the shadows were so sharp I could see individual mountain peaks on the crater rim. Has anyone else had a random night where everything just lines up and you know you'll never beat that shot?

Took a $4k pay cut for a shorter commute and man did it backfire

I left a job in Charlotte paying $72k for one 15 minutes from my house at $68k thinking I'd get 2 hours of my day back. Turns out the new place has a toxic manager who micromanages every ticket and I'm working way longer hours than I ever did at the old spot. Has anyone else traded money for time and ended up losing both?
