Pro tip: I watched a guy at the co-op use a 10mm wrench on a 14mm axle nut.

He forced it, stripped the corners, then argued it was the right tool. This was in Portland last Tuesday. How do you politely correct a customer who's about to wreck their own bike?

Honestly I just keep a spare 10mm wrench in my pocket for this exact thing. I'll walk over and say something like "hey man, I've rounded off so many of those with a 10, can I show you the 14 I use?" It makes it about my own dumb mistakes instead of their skill. Usually they get it and swap tools. I mean, if they still force it after that, it's on them.

My buddy saw a guy trying to force a pedal off with the wrong size Allen key. He just walked over and said, "Mind if I check your tool for a sec?" and swapped it out. The guy was annoyed at first but thanked him later when it worked.

Ugh, that's so condescending though. Just barging in on someone's project is rude, even if you're right. Let people figure things out on their own, that's how you learn. I'd be ticked off if some random person acted like I was too dumb to pick a tool. Maybe the guy wanted to struggle a bit, it's his bike and his time. Not every moment needs a hero.
