The nurse at my sister's hospital in Tucson got me hooked on a show with zero hype, and I binged 4 seasons in 11 days
I was sitting in the waiting room at St. Joseph's in Tucson back in March while my sister was getting her appendix out, and this nurse named Carla kept coming through to check on everybody. Around hour three she saw me scrolling my phone looking bored out of my mind and just said "you look like someone who needs a show that grabs you in the first ten minutes." She pulled up her own phone and showed me this older British crime series I had never even heard of, no ads anywhere, no one at my office talks about it, nothing. I watched the pilot that night in the hotel and by the time my sister got discharged two days later I was already three episodes deep. Eleven days after that I had burned through 4 full seasons, which is wild for me because I usually quit shows by episode two. What got me was how she described it, she said "it doesn't waste your time" and she was right, every episode moves the story forward and nothing feels like filler. So my hack now is asking real people who work long shifts what they watch, because Carla clearly knew what holds up when you're tired. What show did somebody random put you onto that actually delivered?
Some guy at a bus stop told me to watch The Fall and it was pretty solid. Short seasons, no filler, and Gillian Anderson is great in it. Random strangers give better picks than any ad ever has.
