A farrier in Amarillo told me my hammer drift was off and it cost me 3 billets
I was at a hammer-in down in Amarillo last month, working on a damascus billet in front of maybe 14 people. An old farrier named Ray stopped me mid-draw and pointed at my drift, said I was pushing the steel sideways instead of thinning it out. I've been forging 9 years and never had anybody break it down like that, so I went back to my home forge and tried his grip on 3 more billets. Two of them split out on the edges, but the third one came out cleaner than anything I've made since spring. Turns out I'd been fighting my own hammer this whole time. Anybody else ever get corrected at a demo and have it mess with your head for weeks?
