A kid at the supply shop in Dayton asked why I still quench in oil instead of just using water
He said his instructor told him water is faster and cheaper, and I just shrugged. Anyone else notice the newer folks getting taught shortcuts before they learn why the old way works?
Had the same thing happen with a young guy at our shop who wanted to skip tempering to save time. I just let him try it on a scrap piece and watched it crack right in half on the quench. Some lessons you can't teach with words, they gotta feel it themselves.
