A quick chat at the Toledo hammer-in changed how I think about heat
I was at the Toledo hammer-in last fall, just watching a guy forge a leaf keychain. He stopped and said, 'You see that color? That's not orange, that's butter.' He explained he waits for that soft, buttery yellow before he starts drawing out the tip, not the bright orange I usually aim for. It was a small thing, but it made me pay way more attention to those subtle color shifts in the fire. Anyone else have a simple tip that just clicked for them like that?

Try listening for the sound of the steel too. It makes a different hiss when it hits the right heat for drawing out.

Yeah the sound change is huge. I was hammering some mild steel last week and it went from a dull thud to this sharp ringing ping when it hit the right temp. Totally different feel in your hands too, the hammer bounces different. Once you hear it you can't unhear it, it's like the metal is talking to you.

Does that hiss Elizabeth mentioned sound like a quiet sizzle?
