A retired shipyard welder told me my hammer blows were 'all arm, no shoulder' and after a month of focusing on that pivot, my tenon shoulders are way cleaner.

Honestly, I was getting frustrated with my joinery until he pointed out I was basically just muscling the steel instead of letting the hammer's weight and my body's rotation do the work, so has anyone else had a simple form critique that fixed a bigger problem?

That "all arm, no shoulder" thing is everywhere. People push too hard with just their hands in all sorts of tasks, from writing to using a mouse, and tire themselves out. Letting the bigger motion do the work is a basic fix for a lot of strain.

Oh man, you are so right. I had to learn this the hard way when my wrist would ache after a long day on the computer. Started focusing on moving from the elbow and shoulder for mouse work, not just flicking the wrist. It feels weird at first but makes a huge difference. That bigger muscle group doesn't get tired nearly as fast.

Yeah, I'm guilty of that too. I'll be hunched over my desk like I'm trying to write with just my fingers. No wonder my back hurts, right?
