Switched from a coal forge to propane and it changed my whole shop routine
I used a coal forge for about 2 years here in my garage in Denver. Last month I finally tried a propane forge from a buddy who was upgrading. The heat control is way better and I don't spend 20 minutes just getting the fire right every time I start a project. No more dealing with ash cleanup or adjusting the air flow constantly either. Has anyone else made the switch and noticed a big difference in how fast you work?

Thing is, coal forges have been working fine for hundreds of years and propane tanks are just more money every time you fire it up. If you're doing this as a hobby and not selling work constantly, the extra cost adds up fast.

Propane is just paying for convenience. Coal works.

Denver winters probably make coal a pain with all that smoke and ash cleanup inside a garage... I get that. But I've seen plenty of guys switch over and then complain about the cost of propane tanks running low fast, especially if you're doing big projects. Maybe it's just me, but I wouldn't call it a life changing move over a little faster startup time.
