That friend who only wants to play as the bank in Monopoly

Last month I invited a buddy over for game night and he insisted on being the banker in Monopoly, then he started sneaking extra bills to himself. I caught him after 20 minutes when I noticed he had a stack of $500s that didn't match the bank's total. Has anyone else dealt with a player who just can't resist cheating in a simple board game?

Question about rigging angles on smaller mobile cranes

Been seeing more guys using the same sized slings for every pick without checking the load angles. Last week on a job in a tight lot, a guy hooked up a 5,000 lb AC unit with the slings at almost 90 degrees apart. That sling rating drops fast the wider you go. I had to stop him before he lifted because he was near 50% of capacity just from the angle. Am I the only one running into this on job sites lately?

I finally compared ground penetrating radar to old fashioned test pits on a site last month

We were surveying a 1700s farmstead in upstate New York and had a week to locate the foundation. The GPR gave us these fuzzy blobs that could have been anything, so I decided to dig two test pits where we thought the main house was. First pit hit stone rubble at 18 inches, second one uncovered a hearth base. The radar showed a ghost shape but the shovel told the real story. Has anyone else found that the older methods still beat the tech stuff for small sites?

Last week I ran a retainer contract side by side with a flat fee deal and saw the math clear as day

I had two clients this quarter, one in Denver paying a $3,000 monthly retainer and another with a flat $9,000 project fee for three months work. The retainer client needed way more revisions and check ins, but the flat fee one gave me space to breathe and finish early. Is it just me or does the retainer model sometimes let clients nickel and dime your time without even thinking?

That cheap sleeping pad I bought on Amazon finally failed me in the middle of the night

Last month I was camping up near Lake Almanor and woke up at 3am flat on the ground. My $30 foam pad just gave up after maybe 8 trips. I kept telling myself it was fine but honestly you get what you pay for. I'm not saying spend top dollar but people overlook how much a decent pad matters for actually getting sleep. Anybody else had a budget piece of gear let them down at a bad time?

Noticed a shift in how clients ask for help since COVID

Back around 2020, most of my calls in Austin were about setting up home offices or fixing slow internet. Now in 2024, I'm seeing a lot more requests about securing personal data and cleaning up old accounts. Seems like people finally got nervous after those big data breaches made the news last year. Has anyone else seen this change in their area?

That $70 K&N cold air intake I thought was a steal

I bought a used K&N cold air intake off Facebook Marketplace for $70 last month. Figured I was saving like $300 compared to new, right? Got it home and the filter was completely caked in mud and the plastic housing had a crack I didn't see in the photos. Tried to clean it up but the MAF sensor mount was stripped out and I ended up just throwing the whole thing in the trash. Has anyone else learned the hard way that used intakes are almost never worth the headache?

TIL never trust a celebrity 'sale' code on Instagram

I spent $47 on a skincare set because a B-list actress posted a 50% off link in her story. Turned out the 'sale' was just her affiliate markup, and the same set was $32 on the brand's own site. The products arrived 3 weeks late and smelled like plastic. Now I double check every celeb promo code against the actual store. Has anyone else gotten burned by an influencer's 'exclusive' deal?
