Teaching my kids Catan after 8 years of competitive play backfired hard

I tried running a family game night with my 9 and 11 year old using my usual tournament rules and they both quit by turn 3, so now I'm wondering if I should just let them trade like they want instead of enforcing the "no charity" rule?
